On the initiative of the major European manufacturers of methyl chloride, the Methyl Chloride REACH consortium has been established in January 2009, following one year of preparatory work.

Consortium description
The aim of this consortium is to prepare consistent REACH registration documents being necessary to fulfil the REACH obligations of the members. The secretariat of the Methyl Chloride consortium will be handled by ReachCentrum.

Substance
The Methyl Chloride substance shall be registered under REACH by December 2010. The main aim of the consortium is to register the substance as an intermediate. However some members will make a full registration. The extra costs involved will be shared only with the companies that need a full registration.

Membership
The Methyl Chloride REACH consortium is open to any European or non-European manufacturers, importers or only representatives as defined in the REACH Regulation of the substance on its own, in preparations or in articles and that are subject to the registration requirements pursuant to the REACH Regulation, or Affiliates thereof. Downstream users and other data holders are invited to play an active role in the work of the consortium
